Interlaken - the adventure capital of Switzerland
Interlake is a Swiss town and municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern. It is an important and well-known tourist destination and the main transport gateway to the mountains and lakes of that region.
The town is located on the flat alluvial land called Bödeli between the two Lakes of Brienz to the east and Thun to the west and alongside the river Aare, which flows from one to the other.
The town is principally a base from which to explore the surrounding areas. Among the main attractions are the mountains of the Jungfrau region, including the Jungfrau, (4,158 m), the Mönch (4,107 m) and the Eiger (3,967 m).
Over 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts, and ski lifts lead to 200 kilometers of pistes and a dense network of hiking trails. Excursion ships, including historic paddle steamers, ply the waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.
On the right bank of the Aare, opposite the Kursaal, is a swimming pool, and visitors will find a golf course in Unterseen, as well as sailing and windsurfing on the lakes, parasailing, horseback riding, and tennis.
The Interlaken Monastery and Castle is one of the more interesting tourist places in Interlaken and is also a Swiss heritage site of national significance. Everything from the sprawling lawns and open spaces to the handsome building complex makes it worth a visit.
