The Romans gave early affirmation of the strategic and commercial value of the location by building a settlement on the left bank of the Rhein. One day this place would be called Stein am Rhein, which literally, means "stone on the Rhein."

Stein am Rhein is a historic town and a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. It is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Old Towns of Switzerland, located on the border of Switzerland and Germany.

The charming cultural town is famous for its magnificent mural paintings and romantic alleys. Stein am Rhein received the first Wakker Prize for the preservation of its architectural heritage in 1972.

The Benedictine monastery of St. Georgen, founded in the 11th century, symbolizes the former economic importance of the town to this day. The complex directly on the Rhine can be visited as a museum.

Also recommended is a visit to Kirche Burg in Vor der Brugg, the quarter situated on the left shore of the Rhine. There you will find remains of the wall of the ancient Roman fortifications Tasgetium.
