The Rhine Castles of Werdenberg
Werdenberg Castle is a castle in the municipality of Grabs of the Canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
Werdenberg was a county of the Holy Roman Empire, within the Duchy of Swabia, situated on either side of the Alpine Rhine, including parts of what is now St. Gallen (Switzerland), Liechtenstein, and Vorarlberg (Austria).
The castle, overlooking the small lake Werdenbergersee, is from the late middle ages with its tower, palace, and courtyard which was founded about 1230 A.D. by Count Rudolf the first of Montfort. It includes, amongst other rooms, some stately living and sleeping chambers, a pharmacy (dating from about 1860), artist's studios and function rooms.
Today, the architectural complex comprises two museums – one in the castle and one in the town – that tell the 800-year history of the rulers and their subjects.
The walk from the lake is pleasant as you make your way up through the medieval village towards the castle. It has fine views of Werdenberg from the castle grounds.
Wooden structure in the castle's courtyard serves homemade cakes and regional snacks. The buildings are well preserved and you can have calm walking through cobbled streets.
