Mt. Säntis: Climbing, Hiking & Mountaineering
Can you imagine that you can see six countries from one spot? Just one word, Säntis! And these six countries are Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Liechtenstein and, of course, Switzerland.
At 2,501 meters above sea level, Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein massif of northeastern Switzerland. It is also the culminating point of the whole Appenzell Alps.
The mountain is a highly visible landmark thanks to its exposed northerly position within the Alpstein massif. Because of that, it is also perfectly suited as a host for terrestrial communication devices. At the top, there are many antennas, some of them attached to a pylon that rises 123 meters above the ground.
Säntis had been a popular destination for tourists since the mid 19th century. Today, the summit is easily accessible by aerial tramway from Schwägalp.
When in spring the mountain meadows bloom abundantly, it is time to put on your hiking boots. The hiking season lasts until autumn. Various routes lead to the summit, but the nature adventure park on Schwägalp also invites you to make discoveries.
As soon as the valley lies in dense fog in autumn, it is an impressive nature experience to stand on the Säntis above a sea of fog.
