Discover Appenzell, Switzerland's most traditional region
Appenzell is a historical canton in the northeast of Switzerland and entirely surrounded by the canton of St. Gallen, about an hour and a half's drive from Zurich.
The region is known for rural customs and traditions such as the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances, as well as hiking tours in the Alpstein region.
With its rolling green hills - home to thousands of cows - the area is well known for its production of Appenzeller cheese but the little villages and towns that dot the region are worth a visit in their own right, and none more so than the town which also bears the name of Appenzell.
The Alpstein mountain range forms the backdrop of the Appenzell region. During summer, the Alpstein is a hiker's paradise. Two popular destinations are Ebenalp and Hoher Kasten. They are challenging and beautiful, so these hikes will not bore experienced hikers.
Winters in Appenzell are special when compared to what one typically expects from the Swiss Alps. Unlike the Bernese Oberland or the mountains of the Valais or Graubünden, there are no too many skiers here. This means that you are free of skiing crowds.
Appenzell's highlight is a quaint and rustic old hut built into a cliff at about 5,000 feet, just below a peak called Ebenalp.
A visit to the town of Appenzell should be on your list, too. It is very beautiful and attracts the most tourists in the region, in particular for its house facades. Like with so many things, the tradition of painting houses here happened thanks to a degree of admiration and jealousy.
