Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe
Jungfraujoch is a saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousand peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 meters above sea level. It is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area.
Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch.
The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 meters is the highest in Europe. Construction of the railway began in 1896 and was all done by manual labor: pickaxes, shovels, and human labor. It took sixteen years to complete the railway, officially opening in 1912.
Today, trains carry more than two million people a year. No catering onboard, there are however restaurants on the Jungfraujoch, Kleine Scheidegg and some other intermediate stations.
This high alpine experience has a huge price tag. Also called the Top of Europe, there is a lot of marketing and advertising to make you, as a tourist, feel like this something you must do. And it’s working.
Once on the top, immerse yourself in the fascinating high alpine wonderland of eternal ice, snow, and rock. Outside there are views of the moraine-streaked 23km-long tongue of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps and a Unesco World Heritage Site.
In order to enjoy the total experience of arrival on the top of the Jungfraujoch to the fullest, we recommend setting off from Interlaken East. The trip takes 2 hours 15 minutes each way and you are able to enjoy the spectacular and unique countryside during the whole train journey via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.
