Grimsel pass and the breathtakingly beautiful mountain road
The Grimsel Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 meters. The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône. As the Aare is a tributary of the Rhine, the pass crosses the continental divide between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
The pass road runs through a wild, sparsely grown mountainous region marked by granite rocks, reservoir lakes, and power plants.
The road ascends through canyons of wild beauty that get narrower and narrower. Hydroelectric power plants, high voltage power lines and high reservoir lake walls dominate the landscape on the northern side of the Grimsel Pass.
Due to the high altitude of the pass, and its continental location, the climate is cool or cold all year round, and receives a fair amount of precipitation year-round (the majority of which is snow). Snow usually falls from late September until late June, although during cool spells, it can snow at the height of summer.
A breathtaking panoramic view awaits you from the top of the pass at 2165 meters above sea level. The Rhone Glacier glistens in the distance, and the Totensee Lake reflects some of the most impressive peaks of the Bernese Alps.
The Susten-Grimsel-Furka Alpine Pass Route is collectively referred to as the "BIG 3" and make together a hundred-twenty kilometer of ultra-scenic driving in the Swiss Alps.
