Bern, also spelled Berne, city, capital of Switzerland and of Bern canton, in the west-central part of the country. It lies along a narrow loop of the Aare River.
Bern has a population (as of December 2018) of 133,883. About 34% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Most of the population speaks German as their first language.
Bern is home to 114 Swiss heritage sites of national significance. It includes the entire Old Town, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many sites within and around it.
One of the many things to love about Bern's UNESCO-listed medieval center is its uniformity: Most of the city was claimed by a fire in 1405, and tall sandstone buildings took over from the old wooden houses.
There are six kilometers of arcades in all, hiding shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants.

Switzerland's museums and art galleries are among the best in the world. The Renzo Piano-designed Paul Klee Zentrum on the outskirts of Berne houses many of the finest works by the city’s most famous artist and also hosts international exhibitions.
Climbing the 100-meter spire of Berne's cathedral is a must (open daily). Also notable are the City Hall (Rathaus; 1406–16, restored 1942) and the Nydegg Church (1494). The Federal Palace (Bundeshaus; 1851–1902) houses the Swiss federal parliament, as well as the administrative and executive offices of the federal government.
Ice-cream and chocolate
Gelateria di Berna, which has four locations in the city (plus another in Zurich) and is a Bernese institution, creates unusual flavours like hibiscus flower, strawberry and balsamic vinegar, and there’s a chocolate sorbet to die for.

The Grimsel Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 meters. The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône. As the Aare is a tributary of the Rhine, the pass crosses the continental divide between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
The pass road runs through a wild, sparsely grown mountainous region marked by granite rocks, reservoir lakes, and power plants.
The road ascends through canyons of wild beauty that get narrower and narrower. Hydroelectric power plants, high voltage power lines and high reservoir lake walls dominate the landscape on the northern side of the Grimsel Pass.
Due to the high altitude of the pass, and its continental location, the climate is cool or cold all year round, and receives a fair amount of precipitation year-round (the majority of which is snow). Snow usually falls from late September until late June, although during cool spells, it can snow at the height of summer.

A breathtaking panoramic view awaits you from the top of the pass at 2165 meters above sea level. The Rhone Glacier glistens in the distance, and the Totensee Lake reflects some of the most impressive peaks of the Bernese Alps.
The Susten-Grimsel-Furka Alpine Pass Route is collectively referred to as the "BIG 3" and make together a hundred-twenty kilometer of ultra-scenic driving in the Swiss Alps.

The Furka Pass links Andermatt in the Canton of Uri with Gletsch in the Canton of Valais. At an altitude of 2431 meters above sea level, the Furka is one of the highest Alpine passes in Switzerland.
It is also one of the highest roads in Europe, and a road in the Alps that those in search for the best driving roads in Europe should experience. It is many people’s favorite road, and it might become yours too.
The railway, which passes through the Furka Tunnel, is part of a larger railroad system connecting eastern and western Switzerland.
The Furka Pass never attained supra-regional importance in history. Together with the Oberalp Pass, it provided an east-west crossing within the Alps, helping the inhabitants of the Valais to emigrate and facilitating a variety of trading relations between the Valais, Uri and Graubunden.

On the Valaisian side, at Hotel Bélvèdere, about three kilometers below the ridge of the Furka Pass, one can get a good view of the Rhone Glacier. An excursion to the glacier grotto, an ice chamber that is built every year anew, is definitely worth your while.
The great river is derived from these remote snow melts before crossing the entire canton until Lake Geneva and – then – on to the Mediterranean! It is definitely worth a stop at the restaurant that overlooks this incredible place.
The Furka Pass was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. One curve on the east side of the pass is even named "James Bond Strasse".

Engstlensee is a natural lake used as a reservoir in the municipality of Innertkirchen, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. It is located near Joch Pass at an elevation of 1850 m.
The water of the Engstlensee passes through a tunnel in the neighboring Gadmental valley before being used in the Fuhren, Hopflauenen and Innertkirchen power stations.
Very idyllic little mountain lake in the Bernese Alps. During summer, there are cows around and allow you some typical swiss images. Great hiking area as well!

It is the ideal place to break a long-distance hike; the Engstlensee is on several hiking trails such as the Nidwaldner Höhenweg (high trail), ViaSbrinz and Via Alpina.

Gelmersee (or Lake Gelmer) is a reservoir in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. It is easily accessed by car, possible by public transportation but the connections are limited.
The main attraction is the ridiculously steep open-air funicular, which takes you up to the Gelmersee reservoir. Since the funicular only takes 24 people up at a time, they sell out fast, so you should buy advanced tickets online, more about that below.
Originally built to transport the heavy construction materials for the Gelmer dam, it is nowadays open for adventure-seeking hikers.
If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, this is exactly where you should be. With an inclination of up to 106%, this funicular is the steepest of its kind in Europe.

After the spectacular mountain ascent with the Gelmerbahn, the mountain walk around the Gelmersee starts. The hike is only 4.5km but the estimated hiking time is 2 hours so you can get a sense of the maximum pace the trail allows.
Anything you want to have you’ll need to bring. Unlike many other destinations, there is no restaurant or gift shop once you reach your destination. Bring a picnic lunch and let your feet dangle in the blue water.
The Gelmerbahn is open from May 26th to October 21st. Its hours are from 9 AM-4 PM in June, September, and October, and from 9 AM-5 PM in July and August.

If your ideal holiday is filled with lake cruises, gentle hikes and long, leisurely lunches, then you'll be enchanted by Lucerne and the surrounding lake region.
Lake Lucerne is a lake in central Switzerland and the fourth largest in the country. The lake has a complicated shape, with several sharp bends and four arms.
The only way to get a sense of its shape and the drama of the scenery is from a boat. Kept in pristine shape, the steamboats’ engines churn below deck, while you relax on the sun deck and watch as the scene shifts around you.
There are many different boat trips available at the 38 km long Lake Lucerne. There are round trips from Lucerne to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock that take less than an hour, and there are single trips from Lucerne to Flüelen that take close to 3 hours. Whatever you choose, a boat trip is a great way to enjoy the beautiful region at a slow pace.

Apart from its mountain viewpoints, the lake offers tucked-away resorts, all accessible by boat. The far eastern reach of Lake Lucerne – Lake Uri or Urnersee – is home to the Rütli Meadow, where the country was legendarily born.
Different sports are possible in some separate areas due to water and wind conditions. The lake is accessible from boat and yacht harbors to lake resorts and pools. Therefore the lake can be easily accessible from both shores.
There are about ten places where you can dive without a boat in Lake Lucerne. The water is rather chilly all year round and therefore mostly very clear.

Weggis is a municipality in the district of Lucerne in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland and forms part of the northern shore of Lake Lucerne.
After Lucerne, Weggis is the second biggest tourist destination in Canton Lucerne. With the aerial tramway, one can arrive at Rigi-Kaltbad, in the neighborhood of which is located Viewpoint Känzeli.
Weggis is also designated the "Riviera of Central Switzerland" because of its "tropical" climate. This is a beautiful region, steeped in history and romance - the legend of ‘William Tell’ and other colorful stories unfold in this corner of the world.
In a country known as a skier’s paradise, Weggis sits on a thumb-shaped promontory in a zone where mild temperatures allow olive trees to thrive. If you want a panoramic view of greenery reaching toward white-dusted peaks, you can ride a cable car dangling 4,000 feet above Lake Lucerne.

With many lakeside hotels and resorts, Weggis makes an excellent place to stay, but most visitors come through while on their day excursion to Mt Rigi from Lucerne.
Rigi – it is called the "Queen of mountains" and ranks among the most popular excursion destinations in Switzerland. From Weggis, the Rigi is easily accessible using the cableway.
You can take the modern cable car from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad and allow time to enjoy a leisurely lunch. From here you can board Europe’s oldest cog railway up to the summit at Rigi Kulm (1,800m) which has magnificent views as far as the Black Forest and many popular walking trails.

Schöllenen Gorge is a gorge formed by the upper Reuss in the Swiss canton of Uri between the towns of Göschenen to the north and Andermatt to the south. It provides access to the St Gotthard Pass.
Enclosed by sheer granite walls, its road and railway require several spectacular bridges and tunnels, of which the most famous is a stone bridge known as the Teufelsbrücke ("Devil's Bridge").
A lot of ancient bridges across Europe are referred to as the Devil’s Bridge. These bridges were built under such challenging conditions that successful completion of the bridge required a heroic effort on the part of the builders and the community, ensuring its legendary status.
According to the legend, it was so hard to build a bridge here that a desperate Swiss herdsman wished the devil would make a bridge. The devil appeared and offered to build the bridge on the condition that the soul of the first to cross would be given to him.

After the bridge was built, the townspeople sent a scared goat over to outwit him. Enraged, the devil grabbed a massive stone and was about to destroy the bridge when an old woman with a cross stopped him and he dropped it. When the devil saw this, he missed his target and the stone landed in the valley, not far from Göschenen. It has been lying there ever since.
The newest Teufelsbrücke was built during the construction of the first Gotthard pass road in 1830. The elegant modern road bridge built-in 1955 is now suspended above it, with a mural by Uri artist Heinrich Danioth reminding passersby of the legend of the devil and his bridge.

Lavertezzo is a municipality in the district of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland and the entire village is designated as part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
The municipality is located in the Locarno district. It consists of the village of Lavertezzo in the Verzasca valley and the exclave of Lavertezzo Piano in the Magadino valley.
The main object of interest is the 17th century double-arched Ponte dei Salti (Jump bridge), also known as the Roman Bridge. After its partial destruction occurred in 1868 it has been reconstructed in 1960. Close to the bridge you can admire a Chapel from the XVIII century.
The water in the Verzasca River, flowing under the bridge, is snowmelt from the nearby Alps. That means the water is really cold! There are numerous warnings posted about hypothermia, so this river is best for quick dips to cool off, rather than long, leisurely soaks in the water.

The river water is a crystal-clear aquamarine color. This is a popular spot for scuba diving. The rocks accompanying the banks of the river and its lower areas are smooth and easy to sit and lie on.
Due to its low altitude and mountain-sheltered location, vines, palm trees, and sweet chestnut plantations thrive in the lower part of the Valle Verzasca.
As the valley climbs towards the mountains, the climate changes according to altitude until an area with Alpine climate is reached.

As you probably know, Switzerland is home to a large part of the Alps, an extensive mountain range that stretches across eight countries.
While the Swiss Alps may be best-known as a prime spot for skiers and snow lovers, the Alps are also a delight during the summer months.
The Klausen Pass runs directly through the Alps, from Linthal to Altdorf, passing through picturesque villages and past breath-taking scenery.
It is almost 50-kilometer pass road from Altdorf (Canton of Uri) through the Schächtental over the pass summit to Urnerboden and further to Linthal (Canton of Glarus) is considered challenging but rewarding, with spectacular views.
After Unterschächen, the road climbs in two long hairpin bends and runs along the northern flank of the Schächental, offering a spectacular view of the Alp Aesch with its romantic 100 meter-high Stäuben waterfall.

A little further along the Pass from Urnerboden, you’ll reach the summit. Surrounded by towering mountains and offering amazing views, it’s the perfect place to take a break.
The Klausen is the first alpine pass to reach coming from Zurich in the north and somehow the high alpine gate into the Alps.
The village of Bürglen is situated at the entrance to the Schächental. It is said to be the birthplace of legendary Swiss hero William Tell.

The Ebenalp (1,640 m) is the northernmost summit of the Appenzell Alps. The mountain is a popular hiking destination and has been accessible by cable car from Wasserauen since 1955. Ebenalp attracts up to 200,000 visitors each year.
Appenzell's highlight is a quaint and rustic old hut built into a cliff at about 5,000 feet, just below a peak called Ebenalp. It's more accessible than it should be — just a short hike down from the top of the Wasserauen cable car (five miles south of Appenzell town).
Ebenalp is home to the iconic mountain restaurant built into the side of the cliff. From the top of the cable car, it’s a short walk through a cave, past by an old hermit’s hut and “wild” church, until you reach the guest house and restaurant.
The path to the cliff restaurant is dirt and rock, not difficult but the footing can be tricky for little children and those with mobility issues.

Berggasthaus Aescher has only rainwater and no shower. Weekends often come with live music and rowdy parties going into the wee hours. The hut is literally built into the cliff; its back wall is the rock itself. From the toilet, you can study alpine geology and architecture.
From Ebenalp's sunny cliff-side perch, you can almost hear the cows munching on the far side of the valley. In the distance, nestled below Säntis' peak, is the isolated Seealpsee lake.

Locarno is a southern Swiss town and municipality in the district Locarno (and its capital), located on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore at its northeastern tip in the canton of Ticino at the southern foot of the Swiss Alps.
It is a town with the warmest climate in Switzerland.
Locarno is known for its mild Mediterranean climate. Quite some people from German-speaking northern Switzerland moved here for that reason, and perhaps they appreciate the Italian architecture and atmosphere too.
Cold weather or not, wandering the cobblestone streets and the lakeside boulevards around Locarno is a lovely experience.
The clear autumn days attract those who are looking for a quiet stay with excursions. The historic Piazza Grande, with the typical arcades, is one of the most famous squares in Switzerland, with its numerous boutiques and restaurants.

In the winter, visitors can get a glimpse of the unusual sight of palm trees, which line Lago Maggiore’s shores, dusted with a fluffy layer of snow.
What is a better way to explore the waters of Lake Maggiore than by taking a cruise? Ferries travel to numerous destinations and for cruises of different lengths, so depending on how much time you have and what you want to see, you will find the right combination for you.
Regardless of the season, the popular shopping areas and markets team with locals.
Locarno is also recognized worldwide for its International Film Festival, the biggest cultural event in Switzerland and one of the most important ones in Europe.

Lake Lungern is a natural lake in Obwalden, Switzerland which is named after the town Lungern on its shore. The lake is drained by the Sarner Aa river, which flows through the Sarnersee and into Lake Lucerne.
The Lungern village lies 750 metres above sea level in the highest part of the canton of Obwalden at the foot of the Brünig Pass.
Almost every valley you pass through in Switzerland seems to be home to a stunningly beautiful lake. Lungern is no exception as you’ll see from the Lungernsee, or Lake Lungern.
The mountain lake, formed by a dam, is popular with pedalo riders, fishermen and, thanks to reliable winds, with yachtsmen (there is a sailing school) and windsurfers. One of the nicest paths for walking or cycling is the gentle circular route around the lake.
Popular fishing destination
One of the best-known fishing destinations in Switzerland, Lake Lungern attracts countless fishing enthusiasts to Lungern every year. Flanked by imposing mountains, the reservoir is home to pike, whitefish and rainbow trout. You can grill your catch at one of the barbecue spots dotted around the lake.

Early in the morning, when the sun rises and the glorious alpine scenery is reflected in the tranquil emerald-green lake, or early in the evening, when the idyllic landscape offers a mystical play of colours, that's when you wish this fishing moment would last forever.

Susten Pass is a mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. The road over the pass is asphalted. It was built between 1938 and 1945 and it links the Reuss Valley at the foot of the Gotthard Mountain with the Hasli Valley in the Bernese Oberland, and the village of Wassen in Canton Uri with Innertkirchen in Canton Bern.
The Susten pass is listed as a road of national importance in Switzerland's official inventory of historic routes. With its 26 bridges and tunnels it was regarded at the time as one of the most beautiful roads in Europe.
This gloriously twisty road reaches a thrilling elevation of 2,264 m above sea level, so you can count on it delivering some pretty darn epic views.
The road is open daily between the hours of 8am to 6pm, however, you can expect the road to be closed much of November through to June due to heavy snowfall. Therefore, you’ll be best just checking if the road is open before setting off on your trip to avoid any disappointment.

The drive over the Susten can be very well integrated into a classic motorcycle tour starting in Innertkirchen: Innertkirchen - Grimselpass to Gletsch, then over the Furkapass to Realp - Andermatt - Schöllenen - Wassen - Sustenpass to the starting point Innertkirchen.
Bicycling is another option if you're physically fit, but you'll need a bike with plenty of gears and reliable brakes.

Revolving cable car
A spectacular new cable car that rotates to give visitors panoramic views, has been unveiled at a Swiss mountain resort. It’s one of only three rotating cable cars in the world.
The gondola revolves 360 degrees during the five-minute trip, treating visitors to idyllic panoramic views of steep rock faces, deep crevasses and distant snow-covered mountain peaks.

The cable car is from Engelberg, a small village which is close to Lucern city, a place known for snow-capped mountains and medieval architecture.
The summit of Titlis is located above the snow line, thus it has a cold, snowy climate with permanent snow cover and freezing temperatures.

Pilatus, also often referred to as Mount Pilatus, is a mountain massif overlooking Lucerne in Central Switzerland. It is composed of several peaks, of which the highest (2,128 m) is named Tomlishorn. It is a jagged mountain that overlooks Lucerne.
The top can be reached with the Pilatus Railway, the world's steepest cogwheel railway, from Alpnachstad, operating from May to November (depending on snow conditions). It takes 30 minutes to climb to the top of Pilatus with an average gradient of 48°.
The steepest cogwheel railway was built back in 1889 and it still functions on its original rails. Meter by meter it scales the way from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm, passing alpine meadows and striking rock formations.
When Alpine tourism began to flourish in the 19th century, travellers started to show interest in the mountain.
Except with the railway, there are more options to get to the top of Mountain Pilatus: by hiking, by cableway or by a round trip ride on the cogwheel train, cableway, and boat.
Pilatus is a hikers dream, especially if you want to take it easy but still enjoy breathtaking mountain views. For the hard core hiker, we advise hiking all the way up the top, but there’s definitely something for everyone.

Aside from the cows strolling along the mountain roads, Pilatus is also home to Alpine ibexes and some pretty birds. Ibexes have been living on Pilatus already for over 50 years and they can be spotted in the early mornings and late evenings when most tourists have gone home.
It’s time to add Mt Pilatus to your list of must-visit sights in the world!

Bellinzona is a municipality, a historic Swiss town, and the capital of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. The town is famous for its three castles (Castelgrande, Montebello, Sasso Corbaro) that have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000.
Bellinzona is home to twelve buildings or areas that are listed as Swiss heritage site of national significance. The picturesque corners and squares, the courtyards and the neo-Classical, Italian-style theatre, and the sympathetically restored old houses tell visitors the history of what is culturally a Lombardy town.
Bellinzona's strategic position at the crossroads of the alpine routes connecting the North to the South is the reason why around the year 400 an important defensive project with three castles, towers and city walls was built.
Motorways A2 and A13 are the main roads connecting the city. The A2 heads north through the Gotthard Pass to Lucerne, Basel and over the border with Germany, as well as south towards Lugano and on to Italy. The A13 heads north-east towards Austria, passing the San Bernardino pass and Chur.
Once you get to Bellinzona, everything is so close that you can simply walk or take a shuttle to the castles.
Bellinzona is ideally located for excursions to the nearby holiday resorts of Locarno and Ascona, over Monte Ceneri to the southern Tessin with its main town, Lugano, up the romantic side valleys of the Tessin or northwards into the Leventina, with the Bedretto valley, or into the sunny Blenio valley.

The Three Castles
The Three Castles, officially listed as the Three Castles, Defensive Wall and Ramparts of the Market-Town of Bellinzone, have been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The group is composed of Castelgrande, castle Montebello, castle Sasso Corbaro and fortified walls. The Castelgrande is located on a rocky peak overlooking the valley, with a series of fortified walls that protect the old town and connect to the Montebello. The third castle (Sasso Corbaro) is located on an isolated rocky promontory south-east of the other two.

The Geneva International Motor Show is an annual auto show held in March in the Swiss city of Geneva. The show is hosted at the Palexpo, a convention centre located next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport.
International Geneva Motor Show is one of the leading auto exhibitions in Europe, on which the international automotive industry shows itself every year from its most innovative and glamorous side.
It displays special bodywork motor cars, concept cars and refined cars, accessories and parts for motor cars, audio & video equipment, car safety equipment and much more.
The world's most renowned manufacturers will present their newest models, from the efficient city car to the dream hypercar. Dozens of cars from major brands will receive their European or world premieres at Geneva International Motor Show, some of which will be available for closer inspection and even test drive. The supercar lineup is strong with Bugatti, McLaren, Lagonda, Koenigsegg, and Rimac concepts debuting in Switzerland this year.
At a time when many traditional motor shows seem to be in decline, with manufacturers increasingly wary of spending cash on big set-piece events, Geneva still looks healthy.
Unlike the other major European events, in Frankfurt and Paris, it isn't dominated by one nation's manufacturers. Held on neutral ground, it also attracts many smaller businesses, such as tuning houses and niche sportscar makers.

Electrification is likely to be the dominant theme at Geneva this year, and for good reason.
New European emissions regulations, which are being phased in from next year, will force manufacturers to reduce drastically the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by their cars, or face steep fines.
Given the massive audience size, it is recommended to book a hotel for Geneva International Motor Show near Palexpo well ahead of time. Our team works with Geneva hotels of all categories to provide you with various types of accommodation. Explore our excellent locations and room rates today by requesting a free Geneva International Motor Show 2020 hotel offer.

The Romans gave early affirmation of the strategic and commercial value of the location by building a settlement on the left bank of the Rhein. One day this place would be called Stein am Rhein, which literally, means "stone on the Rhein."
Stein am Rhein is a historic town and a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. It is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Old Towns of Switzerland, located on the border of Switzerland and Germany.
The charming cultural town is famous for its magnificent mural paintings and romantic alleys. Stein am Rhein received the first Wakker Prize for the preservation of its architectural heritage in 1972.
There is one “main” street on which are most of the adorable restaurants, although you can find lots of interesting shops and other restaurants on side streets.
Stein am Rhein is home to several buildings that are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Many of the houses date back to the 1100s, with beautifully preserved murals on the walls.

The Benedictine monastery of St. Georgen, founded in the 11th century, symbolizes the former economic importance of the town to this day. The complex directly on the Rhine can be visited as a museum.
Also recommended is a visit to Kirche Burg in Vor der Brugg, the quarter situated on the left shore of the Rhine. There you will find remains of the wall of the ancient Roman fortifications Tasgetium.

The Tamina is a river in Switzerland that originates on the flanks of Piz Sardona in the Glarus Alps and flows eastwards and northwards to finally merge with the Alpine Rhine after about 18 km total length.
The lower section of the river, heading northwards through Bad Pfäfers, before it meets the Rhine river near Bad Ragaz, forms a deep and narrow gorge called the Taminaschlucht.
The fastest way to get to the gorge entrance is the public yellow bus that follows from Bad Ragaz station to the very gorge through the narrow winding road along Tamina River.
This site plan shows a red building which contains the museum, restaurant, and kiosk. There is outdoor seating for the kiosk and a picnic area on the right of the building. The entrance to the gorge is on the far right.
You pay a small fee to walk through the narrowest part of the gorge, with rock walls rising 100m over your head and a roaring river below.

The dark gorge is claustrophobically narrow and the River Tamina rampages through it, and you have the perfect spectacle - almost. Because through September, the fearful show is also lit up with moving animations at night!
The tunnel is a bit dark, could be scary for very little kids. There are some info boards in German and English explaining the natural phenomenon and the history of this area.

A country with high mountains, glaciers, and snowfields, naturally has lots of rushing rivers and streams cascading down through the millennia, chipping away at the bedrock, carving watery paths with steep walls. This is why Switzerland is blessed with so many gorgeous gorges and canyons.
Autumn is a fine time to explore these hidden forest-lined places when the stream-side paths become carpeted with yellow leaves – though be careful: slippery when wet!
Some of the popular canyon and gorge spots such as the Swiss Alps, Valais, and the Trient Valley provide unique and enjoyable exposure to this epic countryside, with the mighty mountains of the Alps and the masses of lush lakes being just some of the backdrops to the canyoning here.
Canyoning is a fun, enjoyable and thrilling way to experience some of this epic land, as the assortment of cliffs, slides, waterfalls, ridges and rock faces provide truly awesome settings and views.
Some of the most popular swiss gorges are Gorges de l’Areuse, Durnand Gorge, Gorner Gorge, Tamina Gorge, Nozon Gorge with Waterfalls and many more.

Rhein Gorge, aka Swiss Grand Canyon
It is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Graubünden and is unique in the Alpine region. In the wild gorges, you can experience pure adrenalin while river rafting or take a hike along with the craggy rock formations.

Why have you never heard of Oeschinen Lake? It must be one of those places that just has the bad luck of being in the neighborhood of so many other amazing places that it gets forgotten.
There's nothing quite like spending a beautiful day in the Swiss Alps. A sense of renewal and promise is in the air. Pristine nature and scenic beauty replenish the body's energy.
Oeschinen Lake is a lake in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, 4 kilometers east of Kandersteg in the Oeschinen valley. At an elevation of 1,578 meters, it has a surface area of 1.1 square kilometers. Its maximum depth is 56 meters.
The lake is fed through a series of mountain creeks and drains underground. The water then resurfaces as the Oeschibach. Part of it is captured for electricity production and as a water supply for Kandersteg.
How to get there? From Kandersteg, take the gondola to a location near the lake. It’s about a 30-minute walk through forest and pasture to the lake. Likewise, it’s possible to hike to and from the lake from Kandersteg—it’s about an hour up—or take the gondola up and hike down.

Hikers, mountain bikers and cross-country skiers love this area as it has (challenging) options for all three. But if easy lakeside trails and an uncomplicated paddle tour are more your pace, you’ll also be happy here.
Hiking at Oeschinen Lake should be squeezed into your Switzerland trip. This mountain lake in the Swiss Alps is a true eye-catcher and scores with its beautiful color and its mountainous surroundings.

Monte Brè (925 m) is a small mountain east of Lugano on the flank of Monte Boglia (1,516 m) with a view of the bay of Lugano and the Pennine Alps and the Bernese Alps. It is considered one of the sunniest points in Switzerland.
The village of Brè lies on the eastern slope of Monte Brè and is connected to Lugano by bus service. The village shows the typical Ticinese architectural style.
You can reach the village of Bré from the summit by a wonderful path through the woods. It has kept intact its characteristic of ancient rural village and has been embellished with numerous artworks.
In about twenty minutes the funicular brings you from Lugano-Cassarate to the summit of Monte Brè going through the villages of Suvigliana, Albonago, Aldesago, and Brè, all very sought-after panoramic residential areas because of their privileged location.
If you drive to the summit, be prepared for many twists and curves, and be ready to stop for other cars, as the roads are very narrow.

Mountain bikes are available for hire near the cable car station at the summit, providing an opportunity to explore Monte Brè’s numerous points of interest with pedal power.
There are also several restaurants with panoramic terraces offering a superb view of the Lake of Lugano and of the surrounding mountains.

Lake Brienz is a lake just north of the Alps, in the canton of Berne in Switzerland. It has a length of about 14 kilometers, a width of 2.8 kilometers and a maximum depth of 260 meters.
The village of Brienz, from which the lake takes its name, lies on the northern shore to its eastern end. In the west, the lake is terminated by the Bödeli, a tongue of land that separates it from neighboring Lake Thun.
The lake is fed by pure meltwater from the high Alps and is bitterly cold all year - so no swimming unless you're very brave. However, you can take a paddle steamer and enjoy the lake and its views in full without getting wet.
The regular boat service links all the little places around the lake on its route from the chic resort of Interlaken on the western side to the idyllic little town of Brienz in the east.
The beauty of this area is magical. LIMO LINES proposes a cruise on Lake Brienz, the exquisitely turquoise lake east of Interlaken, and enjoying premier vistas to the surrounding mountains, forested hills, craggy cliffs, and waterfalls.

Can you imagine that you can see six countries from one spot? Just one word, Säntis! And these six countries are Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Liechtenstein and, of course, Switzerland.
At 2,501 meters above sea level, Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein massif of northeastern Switzerland. It is also the culminating point of the whole Appenzell Alps.
The mountain is a highly visible landmark thanks to its exposed northerly position within the Alpstein massif. Because of that, it is also perfectly suited as a host for terrestrial communication devices. At the top, there are many antennas, some of them attached to a pylon that rises 123 meters above the ground.
Säntis had been a popular destination for tourists since the mid 19th century. Today, the summit is easily accessible by aerial tramway from Schwägalp.

When in spring the mountain meadows bloom abundantly, it is time to put on your hiking boots. The hiking season lasts until autumn. Various routes lead to the summit, but the nature adventure park on Schwägalp also invites you to make discoveries.
As soon as the valley lies in dense fog in autumn, it is an impressive nature experience to stand on the Säntis above a sea of fog.

Do you want to see the Alps from above, including sweeping views of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau? Well if you head up to Schilthorn above the Lauterbrunnen Valley you will get to experience just that.
The Schilthorn is one of the tallest mountains in the Bernese Alps. From the peak, you can see Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger, as well as Titlis, Mont Blanc, and even the Vosges Mountains in France (on a clear day).
With 360 degree views of snow-capped mountains in every direction, this is one experience you will not want to miss out on when visiting Switzerland.
To get to the Schilthorn from the valley floor, a series of cable cars must be taken. The cable cars begin in Stechelberg leaving to Gimmelwald and then onto Mürren.
From Mürren another cable car is taken to Birg, which is the final change before the Schilthorn. This cable airway is the longest and was the most technically challenging airway to be built.

Cable cars leave every 30 minutes, starting at 7:25 am in Stechelberg. The final departure from Stechelberg is at 3:55 pm. The last cable car down from Schilthorn is at 4:55 pm.
It is also possible to hike to the peak, along with the myriad of small, but well-marked paths to the top. The hike to the top takes roughly five hours from Gimmelwald for a fit walker.

The superlative mountains and cliffs of Lauterbrunnen make it a mecca – and, too frequently, graveyard – for practitioners of wingsuit flying, considered the world's most dangerous sport.
Lauterbrunnen is a village and a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks.
It consists of a small cluster of streets dotted with shops, lodging, small restaurants, and homes. The town is far from expansive, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm and beauty. Both visitors and locals enjoy this beautiful Swiss paradise.
There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the most famous being the Staubbach Falls. Plunging almost 300 meters from an overhanging rock face, they are one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.

The river Weisse Lütschine flows through Lauterbrunnen and overflows its banks about once a year. The source of the river comes from melting snow high in the mountains, thus making it a very pure and clean source of water.
Most people visit Lauterbrunnen because they are going to hike around the area such as Mänlichen, Jungfraujoch or Grindewald. The valley town of Lauterbrunnen is the starting point for some of the best-known excursion destinations in the Jungfrau region.

Loud thundering and roaring in the interior of the mountain, gurgling, foaming and churning water: these are the Trümmelbach Falls.
The Trümmelbach Falls in Switzerland is a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain made accessible by a tunnel-funicular (built 1913.), stairs, and illumination.
Located in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the creek called Trümmelbach alone drains the glacier defiles of Eiger (3967 m), Mönch (4099 m), and Jungfrau (4158 m) and carries more than 20,000 tons of boulder detritus per year.
It is the biggest subterranean waterfalls in Europe. The acoustically and visually imposing Trümmelbach Falls has always been a source of fascination for writers and other artists.
These glacial waterfalls carving through the cliff walls are a must-see if you are in the Interlaken area. Since the visit takes less than an hour, it’s an easy add-on to other activities you might be doing in the area.

The viewpoints are safe for children with high railings. But everything is wet with the spray from the waterfalls, so it can be tricky to walk and smaller children will need assistance.
The waterfalls are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm from the beginning of April until the beginning of November. In July and August from 8:30 to 18:00.

The Rhine Falls is a waterfall located in Switzerland and the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls are located on the High Rhine on the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich.
They are 150 meters wide and 23 meters high. The falls can not be climbed by fish, except by eels that are able to worm their way up over the rocks.
The nearest community is Neuhausen am Rheinfall, where tourists can also view the Wörth Castle. Boat trips can be taken up the Rhine to the falls and the Rheinfallfelsen. There are also viewing platforms with views of the falls built on both sides of the Rhine.
TAXI LINES invites all the tourists and those who are fond of nature to be amazed by the magnificent scenery of Europe’s largest waterfall. Also, to feel the stunning nature’s miracle shaping of our planet.
The observation platform gives you a special opportunity to get closer to this impressive scenic and capture some memorable photos of the astonishing scenery. The best time to visit the falls is from May to June because of the high amount of water.

For visitors in wheelchairs, it’s recommended that you park in the northern bank car park, as you can park right by the basin and here you will find both a wheelchair lift and a ramp leading to the boat landing.
If you’re spending a few days in Zurich, there are a few options when it comes to how to reach Rhine Falls from Zurich. It’s only around 40 minutes by car from Zurich.

Switzerland has some of the highest mountain peaks in the world, an abundance of snow, and is dotted with lakes and rivers. It will come as no surprise then that this geographic wonder is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ll ever see.
Spring and early summer is the best time of the year to shoot spectacular waterfalls. Because when snow is melting they are are a lot more powerful than in the rest of the year.
Waterfalls are not just beautiful but also a great destination for a hike, to help keep you motivated on the trail. The surrounding views are so typically Swiss, green and manicured.

Venture out onto eternal ice and explore Swiss many glaciers. Most of them are in the Valais and Graubünden Alps and the Bernese Oberland.
The Aletsch region is part of a Unesco World Heritage Site. And not just because the "Large Aletsch Glacier", which carries an incredible 11 billion tons of ice, is the largest glacier of the Alps.
The ice extends from the northern slopes of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau down towards the Valais. The water flows through the untamed Massa Gorge into the Rhone. The entire region is a habitat for many rare animal and plant species, for instance in the Aletsch Forest. The Pro Natura nature reserve is located close to the forest.
All glaciers are located within the Swiss Alps. Most of them are situated in the Pennine and Bernese Alps. The Jungfrau-Aletsch protected area includes the largest glaciers of the Alps.

There are glaciers in the four major drainage basins of Switzerland. The Rhine and Rhône basins are located on the northern side of the Alps while the Po basin is located on the south side of the Alps.
The Fee Glacier belongs to the Mischabel group of the Valais mountains and extends over a length of 5 km and a width of 6 km. It is divided into a northern and a southern section and the Small Fee Glacier (northern) is situated at an altitude of 3800 m.

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 meters high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe.
The mountain's current shape is the result of cirque erosion due to multiple glaciers diverging from the peak, such as the Matterhorn Glacier at the base of the north face.
It is an isolated mountain. Because of its position on the main Alpine watershed and its great height, the Matterhorn is exposed to rapid weather changes.
Since the eighteenth century, the Alps have attracted more and more people and fascinated generations of explorers and climbers. The Matterhorn remained relatively little known until 1865, but the successful ascent followed by the tragic accident of the expedition led by Edward Whymper caused a rush on the mountains surrounding Zermatt.
There are a wide variety of different attractions to be discovered around the Matterhorn. A top excursion is Gornergrat. On this three-thousand-meter mountain ridge, there is a viewing platform with a truly unforgettable view of the Matterhorn and the surrounding mountain world.

The Matterhorn does not have a cable car and therefore offers experienced sports enthusiasts a new challenge – climbing the mountain themselves!
The destination Zermatt-Matterhorn offers more than 70 kilometers of prepared winter hiking and snowshoe trails. Unforgettable tours through unspoiled nature in the romantic snow-covered Valais Alps.

Zermatt is famed as a mountaineering and ski resort of the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by 38 summits above 4,000m, the car-free town is full of life all year round.
It is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It has a population of about 5,800 inhabitants and is classified as a town by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
The village was "discovered" by mid-nineteenth-century British mountaineers, most notably Edward Whymper, whose summit of the Matterhorn made the village famous.
Zermatt is an idyllic mountain village tucked away in the Swiss Alps. The mighty Matterhorn dominates the skyline, creating one of the most unique alpine landscapes in Europe.
Zermatt is a starting point for hikes into the mountains, including the Haute Route that leads to Chamonix in France and the Patrouille des Glaciers.

Cable cars and chair lifts carry skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer; the highest of them leads to the Klein Matterhorn at 3,883 m, a peak on the ridge between Breithorn and Matterhorn that offers extensive views in all directions.
The ski area of Zermatt reaches from the Rothorn over Gornergrad and the Theodulpass to the Italian villages of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtourneche. On the plateau rosa one can find the largest summer ski area of Europe.

Appenzell is a historical canton in the northeast of Switzerland and entirely surrounded by the canton of St. Gallen, about an hour and a half's drive from Zurich.
The region is known for rural customs and traditions such as the ceremonial descent of the cattle in autumn and cultural events such as folk music and rustic dances, as well as hiking tours in the Alpstein region.
With its rolling green hills - home to thousands of cows - the area is well known for its production of Appenzeller cheese but the little villages and towns that dot the region are worth a visit in their own right, and none more so than the town which also bears the name of Appenzell.
The Alpstein mountain range forms the backdrop of the Appenzell region. During summer, the Alpstein is a hiker's paradise. Two popular destinations are Ebenalp and Hoher Kasten. They are challenging and beautiful, so these hikes will not bore experienced hikers.
Winters in Appenzell are special when compared to what one typically expects from the Swiss Alps. Unlike the Bernese Oberland or the mountains of the Valais or Graubünden, there are no too many skiers here. This means that you are free of skiing crowds.

Appenzell's highlight is a quaint and rustic old hut built into a cliff at about 5,000 feet, just below a peak called Ebenalp.
A visit to the town of Appenzell should be on your list, too. It is very beautiful and attracts the most tourists in the region, in particular for its house facades. Like with so many things, the tradition of painting houses here happened thanks to a degree of admiration and jealousy.

Jungfraujoch is a saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousand peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 meters above sea level. It is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area.
Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch.
The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 meters is the highest in Europe. Construction of the railway began in 1896 and was all done by manual labor: pickaxes, shovels, and human labor. It took sixteen years to complete the railway, officially opening in 1912.
Today, trains carry more than two million people a year. No catering onboard, there are however restaurants on the Jungfraujoch, Kleine Scheidegg and some other intermediate stations.
This high alpine experience has a huge price tag. Also called the Top of Europe, there is a lot of marketing and advertising to make you, as a tourist, feel like this something you must do. And it’s working.

Once on the top, immerse yourself in the fascinating high alpine wonderland of eternal ice, snow, and rock. Outside there are views of the moraine-streaked 23km-long tongue of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps and a Unesco World Heritage Site.
In order to enjoy the total experience of arrival on the top of the Jungfraujoch to the fullest, we recommend setting off from Interlaken East. The trip takes 2 hours 15 minutes each way and you are able to enjoy the spectacular and unique countryside during the whole train journey via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald.

In the middle of the Alps, surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas and an idyllic winter landscape you find Davos, the city with the highest altitude in Europe (1560 meters a.s.l.) as well as the typical mountain village of Klosters, with its picturesque chalets (1200 meters a.s.l.).
Klosters, the ski resort located down the road from Davos, is connected to the same ski circuit, making it easy to explore both villages during a Davos ski vacation.
Smaller in size and quainter in nature, Klosters' village offers warm and picturesque surroundings for your après-ski activities: shopping, tennis, squash, sleigh rides, nightlife and cultural events.
The two resorts are connected by the five ski areas of the Davos Klosters Mountains. With its 80 ski slopes and 269 km of downhill runs, Davos Klosters Mountains is one of the Alps‘ largest ski areas.

Beginners have nursery slopes beneath the Jakobshorn at Bolgen with several ski schools to choose from, and from here they can move onto a range of long easy blues on Jakobshorn and Parsenn.
Advanced skiers will find a great range of black runs, many of them cut through the steep forested slopes on the lower levels of each sector, and the off-piste can be superb in good conditions.
Switzerland in general (and Davos in particular) is not a destination for a snow-sports trip on the cheap. However, the resort does offer a program of complementary activities to holders of the free Davos Klosters guest card, available via the tourist office.

In terms of size, Gstaad is just an average Swiss village, but its reputation as a fashion mecca for the jet-set is global. So why does the global elite love this place so much? There's skiing, of course. The village is in a valley at the heart of the Bernese Oberland, surrounded by smooth, sheer slopes.

Blausee is a small lake, in Switzerland, in the Kander valley above Kandergrund at 887 meters, near the river Kander. Administratively, it belongs to the Bernese Oberland.
The lake was created by a landslide more than 15000 years ago. The mineral-rich crystal clear water of the lake also feeds the trout farm. The Blausee is known for its outstanding quality of the fish and even has its own hatchery.
Blausee has a maximum depth of 10 meters, but yet you can spot individual rocks and logs at the bottom of the lake.
Blausee is a magical place. When golden autumn comes, everything around becomes even more fairy-tale-like.

Lake Blausee is a charming spot to relax for a few hours and ideal for kids of all ages. The large playground with swings, slides, fire pits (wood provided) and tables are a perfect place for a picnic. The inviting small creek keeps beverages cool and small kids happy.

It’s certainly stunning above ground, but did you know Switzerland has some incredible places to visit below ground too?
Switzerland's mountains may be top of most travelers' lists, but its caves are also worth exploring. And their cool climates offer relief from the summer heat.
Experience shows that the best treasures are often hidden underground, and the countless caves in Switzerland are no exception. While some also served a practical purpose in the past, they are today exciting places for young and old to explore.
Caves of all sizes and textures beckon from their underground hideaways, many of them accompanied by legends.
Wandering through these natural underground cave systems you’ll explore spiny stalactites and enormous stalagmites in an array of wonderful colors, as well as underground lakes, in what is undeniably an eerie and otherworldly experience.

Electricity provides enough light and there are manmade footpaths and stairs. Still, visitors need a certain level of surefootedness as the surfaces can be wet and slippery.
Put these on your list to visit on a rainy day.
Some of the most known caves in Switzerland are St. Beatus-Höhlen, Wildmannlisloch, Grottes des Roches Grises, Täuferhöhle, Beatushöhlen, Kesslerloch, Bruderhöhle, Drachenhöhle and so on.

The Alpine region of Switzerland, conventionally referred to as the Swiss Alps, represents a major natural feature of the country and is, along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss portion of the Jura Mountains, one of its three main physiographic regions.
The Alps cover 65% of Switzerland's total 41,285 square kilometers (15,940 sq mi) surface area, making it one of the most alpine countries. The Alps are usually divided into two main parts, the Western Alps and Eastern Alps, whose division is along the Rhine from Lake Constance to the Splügen Pass.
Tourism in the Swiss Alps began with the first ascents of the main peaks of the Alps (Jungfrau in 1811, Piz Bernina in 1850, Monte Rosa in 1855, Matterhorn in 1856, Dom in 1858, Weisshorn in 1861) mostly by British mountain climbers accompanied by the local guides.
The country is pretty much purpose-built for adventure – from hiking to skiing to mountain biking and everything in between. The Swiss flag is a big plus, sure, but the Swiss Alps are even better.

Summer tourism
Switzerland enjoys a 62,000-km network of well-maintained trails, of which 23,000 are located in mountainous areas. Many mountains attract a large number of alpinists from around the world, especially the 4000-meter summits and the great north faces (Eiger, Matterhorn and Piz Badile).
Winter tourism
The Swiss Alps is one of the top spots for skiing in the world, and it boasts some of the best ski resorts, with, you guessed it, the best slopes.
The major destinations for skiing and other winter sports are located in Valais, Bernese Oberland, and Graubünden. Some villages are car-free and can be accessed only with public transports such as Riederalp and Bettmeralp.

Switzerland is the source of roughly 6% of Europe’s freshwater reserves. Lakes and rivers account for around 4% of the country’s surface area.
More than half of the hydroelectric power production in Switzerland comes from storage power plants. Their electricity is available for use at any time and can be tapped into during peak demand.
Hydroelectric dams have supplied most of the nation's electricity for about 50 years. That share will probably increase after voters in 2017 approved a law that will phase out nuclear plants and increase the use of renewable energy, including hydropower.

All dams in Switzerland are well-integrated into the environment and contribute to the economic prosperity of the country. This successful development earned Swiss engineers a worldwide reputation.
Swiss dams provide more than energy. They provide inspiration. You don’t have to be a dam geek to appreciate these architectural marvels, mostly set in some of Switzerland’s most breath-taking scenery.

Switzerland was pretty flat a few million years ago. This was until the plates started moving, creating the Alps as we know them today. What is left of earth's sliding and shifting is unique geography with hundreds of valleys, river sources, lakes and peaks.
Switzerland is known as the country of lakes and mountains with good reason. Switzerland's landmass is only 0.4 percent that of Europe, but the country holds 6 percent of the continent’s freshwater reserves.
Switzerland has several thousand lakes, from the biggest and best known, such as Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) and Lake Zurich, to tiny mountain lakes you may never have heard of.
All, however, are exceptionally clean with turquoise blue waters and sparkling surfaces that reflect the sun’s rays. Whether to swim in, to sail on, or just to look at, here are 10 of the most stunning lakes in Switzerland.

Within the Swiss Alps lie nearly all of the highest peaks in Western Europe. These stunning peaks have attracted climbers and tourists for hundreds of years. No wonder the Alps is such a popular hiking and trekking destination.
Whichever region you choose to visit, you will be assured of truly wonderful views. Some of the most known peaks are Mount Pilatus, Rigi, Titlis, Harder Kulm, Schilthorn, Jungfraujoch, Klein Matterhorn, Kleine Scheidegg, Gornergrat, Stanserhorn and much more.
Switzerland has more high peaks than any other country in Europe: 48 are above 4000 meters. In fact, mountains cover a whopping 60 percent of Switzerland’s land area.

The Swiss make hundreds of different cheeses, so the generic name Swiss cheese is a bit of a misnomer. It refers to a mass-produced cheese sold in North America that is vaguely reminiscent of the true Swiss variety called Emmenthal, a cheese with a semihard texture and distinctive holes.
Cheesemaking is a craft and one that requires plenty of expertise, along with great dexterity and precision. It is a craft in which many things are still done exactly as they were many centuries ago.
Cheeses from Switzerland are produced from fresh milk, which is supplied by farmers to the creameries twice a day. The properties of this milk are partly responsible for the final character of the cheese.
The two most famous Swiss kinds of cheese are Emmenthal and Gruyère, varieties highly prized in fondue for both their flavor and their melting ability.

Historically, the holes were seen as a sign of imperfection and cheese makers originally tried to avoid them by pressing during production. In modern times, the holes have become an identifier of the cheese.
In general, the larger the eyes in Swiss cheese, the more pronounced its flavor because a longer fermentation period gives the bacteria more time to act.
Swiss cheese often appears in cartoons featuring mice, but contrary to the animated notion, the holes do not represent a mouse's snack.

Switzerland is known as the home of cheese, banking, and chocolate. Swiss chocolates are world-famous, as the names Lindt, Toblerone, Läderach, Cailler, and even Nestlé feature in shops across the globe.
Swiss chocolate is famous across the world, with good reason. The nation has a long history of excellence in the field, and many of today's chocolatiers still use traditional recipes and make every sweet treat by hand.
Ever since Francois-Louis Cailler opened the first chocolate factory near Vevey in 1819. Cailler’s machinery began churning out the first mass-produced Swiss chocolate and Switzerland has become a paradise for chocolate lovers.

Many others soon followed his lead and before long, chocolate factories had sprung up across Switzerland. In 1836, the Sprüngli family set up a shop in Zurich which would later merge with Rodolphe Lindt’s Bern based factory in 1892, the basis for the Lindt brand which we know today.
Swiss chocolatiers continue to innovate and find new ways to wow our taste buds, and deepen their pockets, of course.
On average every Swiss person eats 10.6kg of chocolate a year.

When you think of Swiss cheese, you think of holes. But Gruyère, which has a smooth texture, is the most produced and most consumed cheese within Switzerland.
Gruyère is a hard yellow Swiss cheese that originated in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, and Berne in Switzerland. It is named after the town of Gruyères.
Gruyère has a long heritage. Records of cheesemaking go back to the 12th century in this region. Today, 30,000 tons of Gruyere are produced here each year.
Gruyère is sweet but slightly salty, the flavor can vary as the cheese ages, becoming earthier and more complex. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming more assertive, earthy, and complex as it matures.
Gruyère cheese is generally known as one of the finest cheeses for baking, having a distinctive but not overpowering taste. In quiche, Gruyère adds savoriness without overshadowing the other ingredients.

No silage enters the diet of the cows providing the milk. Instead, the alpine cows roam freely on pastures cushioned between freshwater streams and hillsides in the Fribourg Prealps. This natural forage is key to imparting the signature flavors of the Gruyere, making it impossible to replicate fully in other regions.
Cheese recipe requires pressing, aging, and is a bit more intensive, so be prepared to set some time aside when you decide to make gruyère at home.

Lucerne is a beautiful small city in the heartland of Switzerland, across the lake from Altdorf, where legend has it William Tell shot an apple off of his son's head.
One of the main reasons that Lucerne attracts so many travelers is it's small but remarkably preserved old town. You can get lost in its maze of streets, passages, and squares, admiring the many and varied murals painted on what seems like every other building.
We urge you not to leave Lucerne if you have not seen the glorious “Lion Monument”, a classic statue carved out of a natural rock.
Chapel Bridge
Chapel Bridge ("Kapellbrücke") is a wooden pedestrian bridge that spans Reuss River. It is named after the nearby St. Peter's Chapel, it was built in 1333 and is one of the oldest wooden bridges in Europe.

One of the characteristics of Chapel Bridge is that it has painting hanged bellow its roof. Part of the bridge is a so-called “Water Tower” which is called like that, not because it holds water but because it stands on water.

Montreux is a municipality and a Swiss town on the shoreline of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps. It has a population of about 25,000, and about 85,000 in the agglomeration Vevey-Montreux.
Its natural setting below mountains protecting it from northerly and easterly winds has made Montreux the lake’s most fashionable health resort. A Mediterranean-like microclimate allows palms and flowers to flourish; a lakefront and alpine views are other drawcards.
Montreux Riviera is a land of contrasts. It’s a kind of miniature Switzerland where visitors and locals have been living together for three centuries. The region is especially rich in cultural events, including the unmissable Montreux Jazz Festival.
The Montreux Jazz festival has a world-famous reputation for its diverse and renowned musical performances. Although it was initially a jazz only festival, it has since broadened its musical horizons. It is perhaps most famously immortalized in Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water".
Château de Chillon, the 13th-century fortress is Switzerland’s most visited historical building and finds its way into several postcards and books about the country’s sights.

With its big tourist turnover and high prices, a picnic lunch in a waterfront park might be Montreux's best bet, especially on Friday mornings when the covered market is crammed with goodies.
A flamboyant statue of Freddie Mercury, bang slap on the waterfront in his trademark strutting pose, is a reminder that Queen recorded several albums in Montreux.
